Detoxing From Heavy Metals

Detoxing From Heavy Metals

What are some common heavy metals we all need to detox?

            • Mercury
            • Lead
            • Manganese
            • Aluminum
            • Barium
            • Arsenic

How do we accumulate many of these nasty heavy metals?

            • Childhood vaccines
            • Cosmetics
            • Breast implants
            • Water
            • Toys
            • Batteries
            • Dental Amalgams
            • Pesticides
            • Large fish like Tuna (Ahi tuna, and Bigeye tuna, and shark contain the highest levels of mercury)
            • Tobacco
            • Food Additives/Colors
            • Antiperspirants
            • Aluminum Cooking Tools/Pans

Dr. Amy Shah reminds us that the key to mindful detoxification of heavy metals (after repletion of cellular nutrients), is the repair of gut dysfunction, and enhancement/support of liver detoxification. Optimizing your gut function is essential. Support may include multivitamins and minerals, essential fatty acids, magnesium, digestive enzymes, Coenzyme Q10, and antioxidants like selenium, zinc, and vitamins C, E, A, D3 and natural herbs.

Natural food detoxifiers include:

            • Cilantro
            • Chlorella/ Spirulina
            • Parsley
            • Micro Greens (one of my personal favorites)
            • Beets
            • Lemon
            • Cruciferous vegetables which include, broccoli, kale, brussel-sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and bok choy.

The first mistake people make when detoxing is forgetting to take a binder.  You must use binding agents to pull these metals out of your body. If a binder is not used, the heavy metal will just be loosed and disbursed to another area of your body. Below are three of the best binders.

            • Bentonite clay
            • Zeolite
            • Oral DMSA

Bentonite clay and Zeolites have a unique negative charge. Most toxins and heavy metals are positively charged.  The two happily bind together and stay united while the toxin removal process happens in your gastrointestinal tract.

Ward Dean MD explains, oral DMSA is a water-soluble, non-toxic, orally administered metal chelator. It’s been use as an antidote to heavy metal toxicity since the 1950s. It is taken as follows: One 100 to 250 mg capsule of DMSA orally three times a day before meals. Take it for three days. Then take 11 days off. Do this for six months. Then recheck your metal levels.

Most of us assume that sweating in a sauna or vigorous workout is good. Did you know that a daily sweat session not only helps improve circulation of your blood, it also helps detox your largest organ, your skin. Fierce sweating will enlarge your capacity to get rid of your daily dose of toxins, including heavy metals.

Finding out if heavy metal toxicity is a problem for you, is an essential step to achieving lifelong vibrant health. Seek out a qualified Functional MD, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, or or Holistic Chiropractor to assist your detoxification journey.
